Introducing Judy Cheung - SEO

Postby Barbara Gabogrecan » Sun Aug 23, 2009 6:40 am

Judy Cheung, an energetic entrepreneur, started her journey in ecommerce almost 4 years ago when she commenced ‘Business SEO’. Without spending a cent on traditional marketing and leveraging only from Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Judy and her team amassed a substantial amount of overseas sales via her website, and consequently, were accepted into the Austrade Export Grant program. This accomplishment was astonishingly achieved within the first year of launching the cosmeceutical skincare brand she co-founded.

Today, Judy and her skincare business continue to enjoy the passive income generated online from direct website sales via various 1st page Google rankings. This passive income was sizeable enough to fund her R&D product launch into retail, and enabled her to hire top consultants to help lift the business to the top tier of the professional playing field.

Judy has learnt all the mistakes and has accumulated plenty of hands-on experience in effective online marketing (SEO). She enjoys sharing her knowledge and helping clients to build functional websites that attract high conversion rates and sales.

Judy and her team carefully select to work with clients who share their entrepreneurial spirit, who recognise the power of Search Engines in building successful brands and businesses, and who are interested in building a long-term partnership with their brand.

Judy’s services are known to deliver strong results, while being highly affordable. MCEI is indeed fortunate to have Judy as a member and to have her as a Diamond Sponsor for the Awards, the winner of which will have Judy SEO their website for 12 months.

Members should make use of the valuable information Judy is prepared to provide in the Forum this week.

Cheers

Hi Judy - interesting chart.
I would like to know of any ideas that you have where someone can optimise their website themselves, without having to pay out much.

Most of the HBB operators are very short on cash and tend to spend it all on producing their product or services and cannot spend much on marketing - even though I believe it is imperative to spend something on marketing (it is like buying a car and running it but not having any money for insurance - what a misguided attitude that is - talking about taking unacceptable risks!)

When people do spend on developing their business, they tend to do it as and when they have cash - so it is mostly unplanned and that can cause a lot of jumping around which usually stops a progression in the development of the business. But that is the nature of the beast - so I spend a lot of time and energy trying to show these operators affordable solutions and have tried to get them to put procedures in place for their businesses (I don't think I have not been very successful though).

Now - everyone has heard about the importance of keywords - but I believe that most don't really understand how to use them for optimisation.
What do you suggest?

Look forward to your response Judy
Cheers

DIY SEO - TITLE Tags

Postby Judy Cheung » Mon Aug 31, 2009 3:15 pm

DIY SEO Tip of the Day

TITLE Tags

The TITLE of your web page is one of the most important single elements for extablishing the top of the page (telling Google what products, services or information on the page you are offering visitors). That is why it is vitally important that you always ensure that you have at least 2 or 3 critical keywords in the TITLE.

Limit length to 70 characters (including spaces) or less.

If you want to brand your site, place the brand name at the end of the TITLE tag. Here’s an example:

<title>Gym Clothing, Yoga Wear, Yoga Pants, Pilates Clothing, Slimming Pants | MarinaJ</title>

When splitting up the brand from the descriptive, I like to use the "|" symbol (aka the pipe bar). Others choose the arrow ">" or hyphen "-" and both work well.

Adjust your TITLE tags for each of the main pages so that they are highly relevant to the content of each page. When you're writing titles for web pages, keep in mind the search terms your audience employed to reach your page.

Repeat in the headline:
Re-using the TITLE tag of each page as the H1 header tag can be valuable for both keyword targeting and visitor experience improvement. Visitors will be more likely to stay on a page if they're reasonably certain that it fits their intended goal or query.

What is a TITLE Tag?

In HTML code, the title tag specifies the title of your Web page. It is code which is inserted into the header of your web page and looks like this:

<head>
<title> Creating Title Tags for Search Engine Optimization & Web Usability </title>
</head>

Hi Judy

When you talk about title tags containing 2 or 3 keywords, are you referring to one long-tail keyword or 2 or 3 separate keywords? Could you please clarify this for me?

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter,

Good question and sorry about the confusion! A"keyword" (KW) I actually mean "keyword phrase" or "long-tail keyword phrase" etc.

DIY SEO Tip of the Day #2

KEY PHRASES

How to Choose your Key Phrases?

Presuming that you know your niche market and target audience. Next is to choose the right key phrases for your SEO campaign. Below is a simple 5-step strategy:

1. Incorporate your Top Keywords in your Domain Name

Domain name is the first point of identification of your website. If practically possible, incorporate your top keywords in your domain name. Doing this will almost guarantee top rankings very quickly with a little SEO work. For example:

http://www.melbourneroomhire.com.au

2. Identify Target Market

For example, if you are selling yoga wear online, your target audience will exist within these general broad markets:

GYM
YOGA
PILATES

3. Target Cities or Suburbs

Targeting specific cities and/or suburbs can be a very effective strategy. First, it will be much easier to get top rankings (much less competitive). Second, you are engaging your local customers. Using the same yoga wear example, if you are targeting those looking to buy yoga wear within Melbourne, your key phrase will look like this:

“Yoga wear Melbourne”

4. Check Search Volumes

To sell well online, you need visitor traffic to your website. Make sure that you are balancing niche key phrases (highly targeted, but generally much lower search volumes) eg. "yoga wear Melbourne" with broader ones with higher search volumes (but naturally much more competitive) eg "yoga pants".

You can use the FREE Google Adwords Keyword tool to help you work out a well balanced list of key phrases for your SEO campaign:

https://adwords.google.com.au/select/Ke ... olExternal (for Google Australia)
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal (for Google Global)

5. Cut out Highly Competitive Phrases

With SEO being the most cost effective marketing tool for a small business, you will still need much larger budget and longer timeframe (6-12 months or more) to get top rankings for highly competitive key phrases in highly competitive markets eg. Cosmetics.

If you have a small budget, cut out from your list very broad key phrases, which are guaranteed to take a while to get top rankings.
With the yoga wear business for example, the final list for a small 6 key phrase campaign will look like this:

Search volume (July 09)
yoga pants 5400
gym clothing 2900
yoga clothing 1900
Yoga wear 1300
Pilates clothing 260
Slimming pants 260

Another WIN!

Hi all,

FYI below to see our latest achievement! A stark reminder, “You snooze you lose!!”. MarinaJ was smart enough to take up my advice and JUST DO IT (remember I already learnt all the mistakes to build up a successful online shop and she doesn’t have to!). Here is the reward for her entrepreneurial spirit …

I have just started a campaign with a new client http://www.MarinaJ.net (6 keyword campaign) who just signed up 2 weeks ago, and we already got her Keywords mostly in page one on Google.com.au (the web):

Yoga pants http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q ... ants&meta= (page 1 no. 8)
Yoga wear http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q ... ants&meta= (page 1 no.9)
Pilates clothing http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q ... meta=&rlz= (page 1 no. 8)
Slimming pants http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q ... arch&meta= (page 1 no. 7)
Yoga clothing http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q ... ants&meta= (page 2 no. 1)
Gym clothing http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q ... rt=20&sa=N (page 3 no. 3)

Note that we are the only SEO consultant she ever used.

What we did for her was carefully thought through keyword selection strategy, as well as currently advising her on website changes to increase conversion rates and sales.

“RE KWs. I would suggest this list to start to bring traffic/visitor numbers up (with board KWs) and also get to page 1 fast (with niche KWs)! Again its striking a delicate balance: Gym (broad) + Yoga/pilates/slimming (niche)

Search volume (July 09)
yoga pants 5400
gym clothing 2900
yoga clothing 1900
Yoga wear 1300
Pilates clothing 260
Slimming pants 260”

In her case, I have advised her to start SEO now rather than later, it was because I could tell that virtually no one in the yoga wear field is doing SEO. Therefore with a little pro tweaks, she goes straight to the top as I expected. If she started later when her competitors have already started doing SEO, it would have taken her longer to get to page 1 and harder to maintain it (once you have a history of being the top dog, you tend to have a stronger ability to stay as the top dog).

Judy how important is it to have a 'history' of your website as far as SEO is concerned? And if it is important, what time frame do you think actually makes the search engine take notice...is it like 3 months or three years? What chance does a site have that is SEO in say - two weeks?

And in the case of MCEI who has a site to promote the awards and will only need it for 2-3 months, how can such a site develop history?

And what about Blogs? Do they need to be keyword optimised too? I have been told that if a blog has good content added for 26 days then it is likely to get listed in the search engines quite highly. Do you find this the case?

Sorry to inundate you with questions, but hopefully you can shed some light on them for me.
Cheers
Barb
